Double Bass 1940s Music

I am having trouble picking up the bass on 40's Big Band and songs - maybe it's my ears. Almost inaudible on most old records, and turning up the bass gives mush. What I can pick up seems very basic.
Any tips on styles or suggestions would be appreciated.
