Details

Offering-up an extremely rare 1964 4001 Deluxe. I believe this to be only the second production year offering the checkerboard binding and full-width Mother of Pearl inlays on this 'Deluxe' model. Other notable features are the plexi truss road cover, magnetic horseshoe pick-up, toaster neck pick-up, and gap-toothed sand cast bridge.
Details:
  • Owned since 2008, purchased from another Rickenbacker collector, it has been a 'case queen' in my possession.
  • Cosmetically the instrument has been rated an 8.25/10 and is quite clean for a 55 year old piece. There are some nicks on bumps on the body, most notable being the sizeable chip out of the headstock point.
  • Deep Fireglo finish is period-correct for this era. There is some overspray on the lightest areas of the instrument, but the previous owner and other experts who have seen the bass believe the finish to be original (some areas of execution were a little crude in the early years of the company, which I believe accounts for this).
  • The neck/headstock junction has a volute which was found on some, but not all instruments of this era.
  • The truss rods were replaced by the previous owner, originals are included in the case.
  • The inlays are in excellent shape for the era, the instrument was re-fretted with jumbo frets at one point. The binding was a little sloppy, I had the work cleaned-up by Ric Luthier Larry David with minimal intrusion on the instrument.
  • The action is on the higher-end which is typical of this era of basses.
  • The pickguard is original to my understanding.
  • The neck pick-up is a period correct flat-back toaster style.
  • The horseshoe pick-up wears the original surround and horseshoes, the bobbin is a period-correct lipped style which was pulled from a Ric lap steel and rewound to spec by Sergio Silva of Italy who moderates the pick-up sub-forum on the RickResource forum.
  • The dials are the 'slash dot' style with no text on the inlay, I believe to be period-correct (this was a transition year from my understanding). Two have chips in them.
  • Pots are period-correct with two split shaft, two solid shaft - all dating to '64.
  • Wiring harness and caps are original.
  • Tailpiece and bridge are original.
  • Plexi thumb rest is a modern replacement
  • Case is a Rickenbacker re-issue of the period correct model.

Appraisal:

  • I will include the appraisal done by Paul Alan Wilczynski Sr., an authority on these instruments who was commissions to build Rickenbacker's most recent run of acoustic instruments. In 2009, Paul appraised the value at $12,000. I am asking very little in terms of appreciation.

Happy to answer any questions you may have about this rare instrument. Please note I have no interest in trades or selling below the asking price.

Happy to ship internationally at my discounted UPS rates.
