Often referred to as a “thumb rest”. Look below the G string between the neck and the neck pickup. Around late 73/74, it moves from the treble side to the bass side.

Really nice...I’ve dreamed of a 71 Jazz for over a decade and almost bought one back in the day. 1971 seems to have been a great year for Fender overall in my experience. Looks like the longer saddle screw should be on the G string for this era, correct?

Indeed the longer screw is on the G string by spec... which is not something intelligent from Fender. I had 35 basses in 6 years and multiple brand/type of strings. On most of them, the D string bridge saddle is the one that would require the longest screw. If you really properly set a bridge using a good tuner, you'll know that for sure.

Also, very nice 71 for sure!! Looks in a good shape... 71 is also the first year for Jazz Basses with the new bridge pickup position !
