1982 SB1

I thought it was a refin only based on the colors I have seen in the old early 80s ad for the SB basses. White, black, red, and blue. I have seen one JJ SB-2 that was very dark midnight blue and looked original. I wonder if this is the lighter blue color from the ads and has just faded, or maybe a custom one off? The neck pocket would prolly be revealing.

I usually play my JJ SB-2 with either both pups on or the bridge only. Last night I was inspired by your SB-1 to switch to the neck pup. Very raw single coil sounds and I was loving it. :cool:

I concur; it's not a color I've seen this model in.
But, the weather checking and finish swirls/wear make it look quite old...

hang on, i'll open the cavity for ye:

no overspray, the control cavity is the same color. The control plate has been on the body since the paint was fresh; there are "black crinkle indentations" in the paint. If it's a refin, it's good, and old.

Thats interesting, it definitely looks old due to the checking and some discoloration. I wonder if it was a custom color. Does gg jaguar have info on what viking blue originally looked like?

Whatever the color was originally, the paint in the cavities would still look very much the same as when the body was first painted.

Obviously those areas are not exposed, so....

Okay Chef, one more question? The seller stated it as an 1982 bass. Is that date correct?

(you know you're dying to pull the neck :D)

I just put new strings on it, and set her up; it'll be a long time before I pull the neck...sorry!

However, the serial number, IIRC was something along the lones of BO10XXX...which-depending on the ''XXX,'' would make it '82 or '83.

here's the cavity of my '81 1K again, and I guarantee that this January when the pic was taken was the first time the cover has been off of it.

Underneath it's still white. Yellow can certainly green blue, but if it's green in the cavity, it surely was green when it was painted.

Glad you like it. It was really sort of an apology for the sub-clarity of using green as a verb in the previous sentence, but maybe it does work as a sig.

Also, it's a great color, original or not, but I'm thinking that it's original. G&L in those days would do anything you wanted off the auto color charts.

That bass is a 1953 Pontiac. A classic.

IMO.

Thanks for the nice coments...
After the thorough cleaning and setup, I used this for a live recording last night.
Engineers and bassist friends in the audience loved it; as did I...both for the sound, and the color-which was much commented on!

One fellow bassist (last guy I know still gigging a Steinberger) asked me "how I made that thing sound like a Stingray; what is that thing?"

G&L SB1+ eden metro head, + Dr Bass 1260+ LDS 2x8+5= big deep and clear.

Stingray? Not really, but big, deep and clear.
If/when I get a copy of the show, and anything's worth posting, I'll do that.
