Dunno why this year-old thread stuck with me but . . .
After years and 3 failed attempts at 5ers I finally discovered the formula that fits my hands: 1 3/4 at the nut and 19mm spacing.
(Now, how do I determine the radius? With a handle on those 3 facts I have a way to quantify the comfort factor)

The odd thing is that the spacing is far less critical on the 4s, at least for me. I'm much more fussy about the spacing on a 5.

I have an old Yam TRB5 that I think is 19mm (as I recall anyway). Poor old gal just sits as I've been only jamming my 4 bangers for months and months now. Again, I think she's 19mm spacing.

I went thru the same thing, owned a few 5'ers until I found one that I could adjust the spacing thru the bridge...ended up with an excellent unit which I can actually use without my fingers getting trapped in the strings from 16.5 or whatever tight spacing!!!

Hey Doc! I don't swing by the forum nearly as much as I used to, but the Roscoe Beck V I bought from YOU is SUHWEET! It's my #1 these days. But I also get plenty of use out of my BTB5 I bought from another TBer not long after that. 19mm for LIFE! In my experience, if you're looking a bass, TB is the way to go. Cheers!

Funny thing I've learned 19mm on a 5string is only part of the equation - I also need to have 35" scale. Don't get me wrong, 34" scale won't kill me, but ultimate playing comfort on a 5-string - 35" scale and 19mm string spacing at the bridge!
