2 Truss Rod Layout Question

Not sure if there is a thread already on this, but here's my question...

When you have a bass that has 2 truss rods, how do you lay them out:

1. Parallel to each other, or parallel to the center of the neck

or

2. Following the taper of the neck

I ask this because I'm designing a bass that has more than 6 strings, and has a really wide fingerboard...

If the rods are not parallel to one another then this forces you to build the neck with extra, unnecessary material since the rods are farther away from the centerline of the neck where it should be thickest.
