I was hoping to replace the stock pups on my Yamaha trb1005 with a Fender ultra noiseless vintage jazz bass V pickup set, while keeping the stock Yamaha pre-amp. With the stock pups being 3-wire: active coil (red) + dummy coil (white) + ground, and the jazz pups being 2-wire: hot (red) + ground, I tried different arrangements, but none completely successful.
1) red to red input, ground to dummy input: Works, but with some crackle/pops. Adjusting the dummy control pots affects the gain, but doesn't do anything to eliminate the crackle.
2) red to red input, ground to ground, dummy input not connected: Works and no crackle/pops, but now there is constant high frequency buzz.
3) red to red input, ground to both dummy input and ground: Same as (2). Adjusting the dummy control pots has no effect.
Both pickup cavities and the bridge are grounded.
Any advice on how to get this to work cleanly? Is there a place to tap into the jazz pups to add an equivalent to the white wire on the yamaha pups? Would caps from red to ground eliminate the buzz? If so, what size/type? Is this just not possible and I need to replace the pre-amp? Other ideas? Appreciate the help!
