I've got the bass listed in the title and have had it since July of this year. I bought it new. As I've gotten familiar with it, I've been noticing something.
The best way I can describe it is that it has a somewhat lifeless sound. Especially thumb/pop. I was at a local GC a couple weeks ago and this guy was just giving a couple bass workouts. He was an exeptional player. I got to talking to him and asked if he would do me a favor. They have an Identical bass to mine on the wall there (infact it used to be mine, I returned it as defective, hump in the neck at the body/neck joint that they still have for sale as "new" even thought it was mine for about 25 days and returned for exchange) and I asked him if he could play on it for me. He being a much better thumbster than me, I figured any lifelessness would show thru with him playing also.
It did too. Compared to some other bass's he was playing it just sounded..... compressed is maybe the word. Lifeless, lacking air, no balls etc.
In considering this for a couple weeks I've been looking for a solution. Yesterday I ws at the GC again playing a Squire Vintage modified Jazz and I love it. I liked the MIA Jazz's also. The one thing they all have in common is that they are all passive. (the ones I demoe'd anyway)I'm wondering a couple things, if what I'm hearing is the sound of a "active bass":
I read one thread about a guy that put an on off stacked switch on his to disable the preamp. I've got the stuff to do this, minus the pot, but can solder etc just fine.
And or maybe changing the preamp out and possibly the pickups. It's got the fender noisless ones in there, and they are noiseless, they also sound, not blah, but not wow either altho I can get a good vintage sound out of em, really good in fact. But thumb stuff has no breadth no matter how I EQ. I'm thinking about doing on off pot first (is there a way I can just hardwire the preamp off to test it first?
And then trying a different preamp.
I played the demo basses thru the same version of my amp while in the store, and loved the MIA jazz and the Squire vintage modified. I don't want to "trade down" and I can't afford to plunk down for the new USA version.
Sorry this rambles but if anyone has experience with the lack of oompf I'm talking about in the MIM or MIA active Jazz 4 strings, I'd be interested. I believe they have the same electronics in em? At the least the same pickups?
