2022 Short Scale basses

I’m in a hotel having coffee and Tears for Fears is on the TV in the lobby.
Oh looky, is that a double cut Duesenberg Starplayer but hollow instead of semi hollow?
Huh. Checking the GAS gauge!

Sorry for the crummy picture of a TV but you need that. Short scale madness.

My U5 is still with my luthier. Besides a pro setup, I'm having Hipshot Ultralite tuners and an Albridge bridge installed.
The tuners on my Gretsch are not great. They don't hold pitch as well as my 34" Sterling or the U5. I am considering learning how to do some mod/repair work using the Gretsch as a platform. Since all you cool kids are doing Hipshots, maybe I will too.

I was also intrigued by a couple threads here showing some body mods to give some right arm relief. Not sure if I am ready to tackle a respray as well.

I’ve wanted one of these for awhile. I HATE that they stopped matching the headstocks on the standard models, though.

This was going to be my next bass, but I need something grittier than jazz pickups. I found a custom shop G&L Fallout SS on their phone Instagram page, and I’m trying to figure out a way to replicate this without spending $2500+! It’s like a mini L2000, and I need it in my life.

The standard SWB-1 headstock matches the natural Ash body finish well. That’s my combo for now, although the Trans White finish is beautiful, and it matches the Chowny truss rod cover.

And the SWB-1 is very versatile, with anything from sweet to downright growly tones readily available. Don’t know if you’ve watched this video, but it’s very revealing.

I noticed that my Gretsch’s tuners were…um…shi#y. They didn’t hold tune for 15 seconds at a time. I knew I would swap them out with Hipshots, if I were to keep it. The shallow neck mass and radius that didn’t work for me made that measure unnecessary. Too bad. I liked the little guy.

Oh, I’ve watched every video I could find on the SWB. It’s definitely on my list, but I’m looking to get a bass with more of a Wal-esk tone. I don’t think I could get that sound from jazz pickups

Why don’t you get a Fallout Tribute, but an MFD humbucker (they sell them on their website), and have someone route and install? Should be under 1000 all said and done.

Here's the video. Looks like a Hofner Club Bass in the background.
