212 vs. 2x112

Hi everybody,
I have been considering 2 12" speakers to my rig, but I was wondering if there is a difference between the cabinets? with a 212 you have two 12s in one box, usually diagonal to each other, whereas if I got two 112s, they would be in individual boxes and the two 12s with be in a vertical line--does that make a difference?

I think it depends on how much you want/need to "bring it" in a live situation. I prefer the 2x12 because it works better as a foundation for an additional cabinet.

interesting question and I think, to my ears, it makes a big difference.

With a 2x12 cab you should hear more lows. With two 1x12 cabs you should hear more punch....low mids.

This is assuming all else being equal though....you know, the
2x12 and 1x12's are of the same design platform.

There's something about coupling two 12"s in one cabinet. I love my Eden 212XLT. Best cabinet I've yet owned. Gives me tons of beefy but tight low end, and far exceeds the feel and response of 15's and 18's for the low end. Putting my 210 on top gives me lots of growl and definition, and I'm a happy camper on stage.

Individual 12" cabs give lots of mid-range punch and loudness, but not the depth and bottom end you can get from a single 212 cab. It really depends on what you're trying to get for your sound.

Seems like you want to add 12"s to your rig? What are you currently running?

right now I am running a basson sound B210b and a carvin 210...i kinda want to ditch the ba210b for a 212, but I am having trouble deciding whether i want to do 212 or 2x112s

i had an aguilar 2x12 for a short period, and switched to a pair of their 1x12 cabs. i got to do a few gigs on both setups. i found that with those particular cabs, the 2x12 had a bit more open low mid, while the pair of single cabs was a bit more focused in that range. on the flip side, the 2x12 seemed to be a bit louder overall before breaking up than the single cabs. lows and hi's were pretty even. for me, the 2x12 brought more of a rock tone, the pair a bit more hi-fi. the amps i used with these setups were an 80's all tube svt and an alembic f1-x into a stewart world 1.6.

If the total cabinet volume, drivers and tuning are identical the low frequency response will be identical. In many cases two 1x12s will have a larger total box volume than a 2x12, and that usually gives better low frequency response.

A huge difference. Midrange response and dispersion are very much improved when drivers are vertically aligned, as opposed to all other topologies, which are only employed when engineering is over-ruled by esthetics.

I have a pair of 1x12 in build right now.

I'm using the Deltalite-II 2512 in Flat alignment at 4.64 cubic feet tuned at 38 Hz with an F3 of 39 Hz. The baffle boards are arranged in mirror image layout, with the woofers close to each other when stacked vertically. I'm using a vertical array of nine 1016 piezo tweeters, also in mirror image. Tweeters are wired 3 in series, and three groups in parallel. This provides 75v capability and sufficient sensitivity to match the 2512.

By themselves, the 1x12 is a manageable size. A 2x12 would be 9.28 cubic feet, and a pain in the butt to haul around. The 1x12 measures 24.6H x 21.5W x 19.5D and weighs 40.5 pounds bare with driver and 1/2" baltic birch. The baffle vent is thin wall PVC, 4.25" ID and 4.5" OD, with a length of about 2". The vent is slightly larger than required for 0.045 MACH.

The only downside to this design is the directional issue (beaming) above 1300 Hz. I could have used a 6" to avoid this, but chose not to for simplicity. From the Eminence charts, I expect a real 103 SPL from the pair wired in parallel.

I just bought GB Neox 212T. I was about to order the 210T cab then started thinking about a 112T cab. I guess it really matters what kind of sound I am going for but any suggests on one cab or the other. Will be running em with a GBE 600. And all 5 string basses, no PA support for me in small to med clubs and thats most gigs right now. Playing alota motown, soul, funk, blues, tejano and classic rock. Im liking what Im hearing from this single cab so far, will gig it first time this coming Friday, maybe I'll know better after that if a second cab is even needed, I do use the LF kinda hot.
