Odd. IME, there is a clear separation between the two crowds with the younger crowd preferring rap or hip hop and the older crowd preferring classic rock. The 30ish crowd is generally at home with the kids. Maybe I just need to get out more......
I think it has something to do with the demographics here. Tampa bay is somewhat of a melting pot. We literally will see hot coeds and gray hair on the dance floor just about everywhere we play. People from everywhere, and many many clubs. There are literally hundreds of venues that showcase live music within an hours drive.
We are about 6 months into this group and have landed regular gigs at 8 to 10 places. We still have yet to break into the better beach clubs. We will...it takes a little time and to get enough of the right people talking about you. The cover is scene here is competitive and can be lucrative $$ if you have your stuff together.
Our set list is making patrons happy as the quote we hear the most is "You don't play the same stuff everyone else does." and "We love the stuff you guys play, some of that stuff brings back memories!"
