I'm a weird guy. I have gigged as a bass player for nearly 40 years (much less frequently the last 10) but I ran on two basses for more than half that time. My guitar collection, on the other hand, has steadily grown because I was always trying to add instruments that didn't overlap one another.
Main gig workhorse is a very early EBMM Sterling (neck date 7/8/93). Light, easy to travel with, well broken in maple neck/fingerboard. I also have a very early Lakland 4-94 Deluxe that I adore but it is heavier and less gig-friendly.
My guitar collection finally got a bit top-heavy and as I began to thin it out I started to get interested in playing more bass for my own enjoyment at home. My prior Rick experience was with a 4001 in 1980 (high school) or so. I kept it about 18 months and fought with it every time I picked it up. I replaced it with an Aria Pro II SB-900 (another one I should have kept) and never looked back.
About 3 months ago, I traded a guitar that I never bonded with for a new Rickenbacker 4003S in Mapleglo on a whim. It jumped out at me off the website.
I can't put the thing down. Everything about it brings me joy. I'm excited about playing bass again. I get up early in the morning and play along with entire Yes albums before I leave for work.
I NEVER thought I would have a Rickenbacker bass again, let alone fall in love with one.
