3-string bass - neck width suggestions?

One of the reasons I want a 3-string, besides rarely using the G-string, is that I prefer moving up the neck for beefier sound when playing higher notes. My technique is very unsophisticated.

Standard Jazz neck and Fender bridge. I used the regular locations in the bridge for the E and D string and drilled the bridge right down the middle for the A string.
