Well ...Joe Lovano might disagree with you! He has encouraged her and included her in his bands.

I think that she is a pretty good bass player - but she is also a singer and composer/arranger. If a new artist can bring audiences to Jazz and inspire them, then that has to be a good thing.

No doubt she has talent and audience appeal - I can see her developing to the level of somebody like Dave Holland - she has plenty of years to catch up with Dave! :p

I'd rather listen to her music than 99% of the manufactured stuff filling the charts and if it draws people to investigate her teachers and this kind of music.....

To say "she's no Dave Holland" is in fact, true. She is not, and to compare them is a little silly in that it is a false analogy. Let's stipulate that Holland is in a class by himself, fantastic player composer and teacher, but Holland doesn't sing, nor is he a crossover artist. By crossover I mean that Spalding plays almost all vocal pieces: some jazz, some latin, lots of covers, and most recently a very substantial sort of chamber jazz that is purely her own and extremely sophisticated.

I don't think she has put 100% of her energy into being a virtuoso bassist, though she is an almost jaw-droppingly good one. She has an uncanny ability to sing complex lines in tune while playing , and I might add, she's easy on the eye as well.

I wish her a long long life with plenty of years to develop because the potential there seems endless.

is not nearly enough of this quality experience

I would not be able to stand 30 secs of rap, HH, metal, death polka, pop, etc.

I also don't think she's going for the viruoso soloist thing anyway - stay more accessible Ms. Spaulding - keep it up

Yes this is the amazing thing - imagine what she will be doing in 10 or 20 years and that she will still be young then! :eek:

I agree that you cannot really compare such individual artists and why should we - just enjoy the fact that we have Dave Holland and Esperanza Spalding doing their own things! :)

Well, not a fan too.
To me it's only a matter of taste - I do not like this kind of singing no matter who performs.
But I would thank god on my knees if I would be able to perform like this on my double bass with closed eyes singing.

Honestly - the attempt to reach her playing capabilities alone is enough to keep me busy for my remaining lifetime...

The hype doesn't bother me, it is just the 30 separate threads that are so obnoxious! Please! Use the endless amount of other open threads on here.

I might say she is no Joëlle Léandre! There clips of her uptempo walking that made me think of the best periods of Mr. Holland.
She is great. Just use the existing threads!
