360 problems?

I have an Accoustic 301 cab w/a 370 head that works fine, I recently acquired a 360 head. When plugged in and turned on with jack going from any of the outputs to the cab I get a power light and no sound.

Is there anything special about the 360 head and a 301 cab that would cause this? The guy I got it from stated it worked at his place.

Any suggestions?

As I recall, the 360 was a preamp designed to be used with a powered cab (I think the cab was called the 361) The 361 cabs had the power amp installed in the bottom of the speaker cab for this use. If your 301 cab is not powered, that may be your issue.

yep, that is correct. I think you can plug the 360 into the 370 & bypass the 370's pre, but I'm not sure....post on the acoustic amp club...they will let ya know :)

I just checked the 370 manual, and there doesn't appear to be a line in, only line out(s). You could take the amp to a tech and have him install a line in jack. Or someone could build you a small external box to reduce the 360's output signal to a level the 370's low-sensitivity input can handle. (Less than $15 worth of parts, basically a potentiometer and two phone jacks mounted inside a little metal box.) I'd prefer the latter solution because then you wouldn't be hacking up a piece of amplifier history.

On second thought, those heads had *2* line outs, right? So maybe a tech wouldn't have to drill the chassis after all -- he could just convert one of the line outs to a line in.

And hopefully mark it as such real well so you don't back-feed the 370's preamp, lol.......

You could conceivably drive the 370's instrument input with the 360's output, if you're careful about your levels. Big mismatch, though. Could be an order of magnitude or more. Definitely not something I'd be comfortable with, especially since a proper workaround is so trivial to implement.

360 into 301 gets no sound, as 361 is PREAMP ONLY.

In the 1980's, I sometimes plugged my bass into a Furman
PQ3; into the first input of my 370; volume low [ 1 1/2-2] on my 370 and very low on Furman; gradually raising Furman volume to taste.

You could do same with 360 preamp into either input of your 370 head, just be carfeful with volume as it will be enough to cause bowel disfunction in youir audience at close range with your 301.

Better yet, buy a quality power amp [many to choose from] and with an A/B/Y box you can use 2 seperate sytems independently or together; awesome sound either way.

Witha Rick 4001 you could go true stereo; each pickup independently amplified. Again; using any bass and A/B/Y box and sound equally awesome.

Have fun and experiment..CAREFULLY...with volume. The 360 preamp has it's unique voice and tone contours. You are very lucky to own one. Also lucky to own 371 as well..great bass amps.

Gentlemen,
This has been addressed many times. According to the ACC370 Service Manual input #2 is 6 dB "down" in gain(-6 dB). Manual states Input # 2 maximum is 820mV. Take the signal out of the 360 Preamp and use a shielded instrument cable to go to the #2 input of the 370. Keep volume @ Zero. Adjust volume accordingly to suit needs. This will work. The guys on the Un-Official Acoustic Control Corporation forum also say this. Hope this helps. Dang, wish I had that problem of owning a 360 preamp!

Peace and Happiness to all :bassist:

Yes I'm pretty sure you can. I had a 301 and 370 and also bought the 360 preamp and seem to recall running it like that.

Oh, that brings back memories.... :hiding:

My only recommendation is that if you have an ungrounded AC plug on the 360, be darn sure that you have zero volts AC between the chassis' of the two amps before you plug the output of the 360 into the input of the 370. If the power polarity of the 360 is reversed compared to the 370, bad things can happen to the 370. Trust me, I've been there.

YES PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT BILLYB Says.
I take this for granted as it's basic Electronics Technician stuff. But yes make absolutely sure that all "grounds" are that and a 360 with a 2 conductor AC line cord is DANGEROUS. My 370 shipped OEM with a 3 conductor AC line cord and accessory AC outlet on amplifier back panel also is a 3 conductor connector. Be safe guys. A poor ground or reversed neutral and line could be FATAL.
I WILL SAY IT AGAIN IF YOU DON'T KNOW WHATS GOING ON STOP AND get a reputable Techncian to fix it.

Peace and Happiness to all
