Why aren't 3x10's arent more popular than 4x10's.

Well, yes. I see your point. I guess what I was gettin' at was the fact of bassists that like the 4x10, but want lesser weight/easier to haul, and don't wanna go to a 2x10. Wouldn't the "in-between" be optimum? I wasn't trying to troll, I was just looking for honest opinions, that's all.

Odd number of drivers equate to odd impedances. Not too much of a problem for a SS amp but difficult for a tube amp.

The impedance, as BassmanPaul says, is an issue. Two 3x10s is almost always going to equal a less than 4 ohm load or a more than 4 ohm load. No one wants a 6 ohm 6x10 or a 3 ohm 6x10, since 4 ohms tends to be the minimum for a lot of amps.

Ok, gotcha. But what about in the case of a combo(MarkBass CMD103H), or powered cabs(Bergantino IP310). Is there just not a trend in these designs?

1) Buyers tend to favor "traditional" looking designs.

2) A 3x10 isn't really all that much smaller or lighter than a 4x10.

My Epi UL310-S1 is 47lbs. The UL410-S2 is 63.8lbs. My UL310
is as loud as many 4x10's on the market and almost 17lbs less
weight than the UL410. A big plus for me, is that it sounds
great at low volume. It doesn't need to be pushed to work.

I don't know.....I'm kinda liking the 310 idea.

That's my issue with them too.

In many ways I can see the benifits of a 3x10 vertical array, gets the speakers that bit closer to ear level. But the impedance being out of the conventional 4/8 ohm region, meh.

I'm surprised they aren't popular, but really when you get away from Talkbass most folks are playing very traditional cabs from traditional companies. I can't believe the number of folks who lug around those old Ampeg and GK cabs, but they do. Of course, I have an IP310 which takes a bit of lugging also, but it'll bury any 410 on the market in short order. My guess is that if GK or Ampeg made a medium-weight 310 that Guitar Center would stock, they'd fly out of the doors simply because of the name and exposure they'd get. Most players have never even heard of the companies who have made 310's. Talkbass really is a very small portion of the bass playing community.

IINM, the Series IIs are already significantly heavier than their S1 counterparts, even with the same number of drivers, so that may not be the fairest of comparisons. But yes, there are differences. I don't think "The Market" is generally that discerning, though.

If Jim Bergantino made a tweeterless, vertically arrayed AE310, I'd buy one. But I'm not "The Market".
