At least five strings for me to feel at home on the instrument. Just got a six-string again and I'm loving the extra range. I've been carting around an old four-string for the past 20 years, but I think it needs to find a loving home, or maybe the farm upstate.

I have a 10lb hammer that I use for everything - finishing nails, screws, putting in light bulbs, planting flowers - that hammer gets it done! 
Right tool for the job, always... I have 4s, 5s and 6s (fretted and fretless) fivers cover the range of music I play mostly but the sixes get quite a bit of play as well, but totally depends on what 'tool' or tone is needed for the job. My EUB is a 5 as well.
These days, my 6 4-bangers either sit in the case or look pretty on the wall.
