I just pulled an ibanez pre out of a 205 and had the same deal, 4 holes. I went VVT and did a home-brew "varitone" cap switch. in the 4th spot. I put an orange drop 405 (the classic) a paper in oil (I think) 22, and for the last one I put something that barely did anything so would have a tone wide-open option.
Rocked that for about a year and it was fine.
A few months ago I scored a Bart 4-knob 918 preamp and have been rocking that since. I think I gave $50 for it used...
The pre is VV T-B with a separate tone knob. I put the volumes on a stacked pot and the treble and bass from the pre also on a stacked pot. I put the tone on it's own single pot. I did it that way b/c I didn't want a push-pull potentiometer to be my on-off switch. Instead I put a little swithch in the 4th hole. It's a perfect little setup for that bass.
OT, but if you every find yourself in a position to end up with a set stock ibanez pickups like they put in the 200-300 series bases, they don't sound bad for cheap pickups. Especially if you upgrade the pre to the bartolini 918 sereis. - I mean, I woundn't spend real money on them, but like i said if your in a swap situation or similar, they're decent pickups in that capacity.
