40 years ago MTV was launched

I have fond memories of music videos being on mtv and vh1. Channels 20 and 19. Then TRL started and they showed 30 second clips of videos and eventually everything was reality shows. Music videos played at odd hours in the middle of the day or the middle of the night.

Headbangers Ball did show some cool stuff from time to time inho. During a time that finding new music was through word of mouth, tape trades, magazines, opening bands and just randomly buying stuff at the store, it was another outlet to find new music.

I remember seeing Infectious Grooves on headbangers and going out and checking em out. I also found Primus through MTV. It had its very brief moments if you ask me.

Ran into Riki at a show a few years ago outside Charlotte. He was really nice and chatted for a few minutes.

I dunno.. a FenderRhodes with the satellite cab phasing, or a Hammond B3-Leslie 260 combination while still copied even today, is not the same as the real thing. But keep in mind , those were more of a 50’s 60’s sound, and you needed the music to go with them.

Instead of mainstream pop music, If you go back and listen to the Jazz artists of that day, or even the jazz pop of the era, or gospel music they were beautiful instruments.

As for generations dumping on the older ones, that’s been going on forever. I’ll still put it out there, what have they done that was so marvelous?

Thats where I first saw Jason and the Scorchers, REM, Redhot Chili Peppers, and The Blasters...
I also watched "In Concert", Midnight Special, Don Kirshners, etc all...
The LA punk scene had one too...can't remember the name it....

All I can say is that MTV was amazing in a time without the internet in the 80's. And when Beavis and Butthead came out in my first year of college, it was so popular, we had 20 people in our college dorm room watching each new episode that came out. Really great times.

I saw the video for U2 song Gloria my first hour watching MTV. First time I ever heard of the band, and it felt like being spiritually reborn the way the video starts by emerging from under the water, with the watery sounding guitar intro.

I also remember those cool Police videos all from that one period where they looked so natural and improvised. So my first impressions were mainly positive.
