4401 vs jazz sound

Ok,

I have a Tokai 80s jazz which I think is an amazing jazz bass.

Now i'm thinking about thinning out my collection and keep just one bass (imagine that!)

So I want it to be more versatile than my jazz.

The jazz sound is a very high quality vintage jazz IMO.

Now I'm thinking of selling it and buying a Lakland 4401, but
I'm afraid that I'm maybe going down a step in quality with the 4401. I've never played a 4401 and there aren't any stores here that carry them.

What do you guys think? Is the 4401 just as high quality as the jazz sound?

Greets,

Cigi

ps: I know a 4401 and a jazz are different basses, but I'm talking about the quality of the guitars, not the specific sounds.

Thanks for the replies.

I know the 4401 wont have a jazz bass sound. Even the 4-94 doesn't really have a real jazz sound, but ik comes close.

I've put my Tokai up for sale yesterday for 800€ (1175$) and it's allready sold. How bout that. I must say it was an 1982 in new condition (had been sitting in a warehouse for 20 years). And it was an amazing jazz. But still I'm surprised that someone bought it that fast for the price I asked.

Stil not enough to buy a 4402 though...

I modded my 44-01 with Nordy Big Singles and an Audere Classic 4 Pre, and it smokes. Now it has a "jazz bass" sound. with the sock elec/pu's you couldn't get a "jazz bass" sound.

It seems that outside the US, Tokai's are held in much higher regard than they are here.

I think you can rest assured that moving from Tokai to any Lakland will be a step up, not down.

As for the stock MK-1 Bartolini package, its very well voiced, dead silent, versatile, and has great clarity.

I've bonded with mine, I even like the way it looks....

The Nordies are smaller aren't they? How much gap do you have around the edge? Do you have a picture?

I have one 44-01 with US Bart pickups/preamp and love it. My other 44-01 is stock. I like it, but the US Barts sound better. I have been considering putting Nordie DCs in it but I'm concerned about the size of the pickups.

I'm not even gonna sugar coat this, but I've got a 08 MIA Jazz V and had a Lakland, and let me reiterate had a 5501 and hands down, no questions asked the the Jazz smokes the Lakland. The 44-01 has the same funky preamp as the 55-01, the low B is great, but the rest of the notes are so anemic is not even funny. If your Tokia is anything like a real Jazz Bass then I would ditch the Lakland in a heartbeat.:smug:

Too late,

The Tokai is gone. I hope I'm not going to miss it. Tokai's are held high in regard here and with good cause. The guy who bought it had played a lot of basses and liked the tokai best (including the new MIA 08). That made me think it wasn't the best step to sell it.

he allso told me that buying a lakie would'nt be stepping down. But on the other hand he wanted the tokai ofcourse.

I'm going to check out the 4401 and 4402 in a while. Then see for myself if I like the 4401, i'll maybe buy it and if I get tired of the stock electronics swap em. If I really don't like it, i'll probably save up for a 4402.

I'm pretty excited. After gassing for a lakie because of al the threads here, i'm finally in the running for one!

Yeehaw :hyper:
