5 string advice desired

Scale length has absolutely nothing to do with B string quality, IMO...
Wood quality, electronics and hardware, and caring assembly by people who care matter much more.

The Lakland 5501 is a pretty good bass for the pricepoint.
You might check out a G&L 2500 tribute too.

Good to know about scale length. All my basses are 34's, so I don't have anything to compare them to in my experience, anwyay.

34" scale is way more comfortable in my experience. I especially notice it when playing in the lower positions like F on the E string. Another thing to consider is does the bass have to have an excellent B string? IMHO all my 5's must have an outstanding B string. Otherwise it gets sold. The poster who mentioned scale length making no difference in B string tone is right.

There is nothing worse than hitting a low C at an appropriate time in a song and it sounding like mush or goes out of tune. Musicman and Modulus have never let me down in that aspect.

I am thinking about an Ibanez as a backup 5 if I find one with a B string that knocks my socks off. I should've never sold my Musicman SR5. It was amazing!

I have a Warwick Streamer 5 it is really nice sounding but took me a while to learn how to play a baseball bat lol. I have a 2007 ESP F404 tribal with 35DC's that I love to play so I have the 2012 ESP DK-5 on order to arrive in April. 4 band on board pre lets me dial in the mids I like. I personally love the necks and action of the ESP the best, and the neck-thru construction give the bass a awesome sustain. Neck-thru for under 1000.00 bucks and quality.

I went to both the Hollywood Guitar Center, Sam Ash and Mesa Boogie stores yesterday. My short list is the Ibanez BTB series, Schecter Stiletto Studio and the Lakland 55-01. Not a single bass to try between the three locations.

(sigh)

Going to try GC Sherman Oaks today. If nothing, will ask them to check local inventory for them. I will not buy before I try!

I play the stiletto studio 5, It have a modern sound, I find it to be on the heavy side, but that doesn't bother me much, the string spacing is tight, which I find it makes it harder to slap. I have found that I can get a very large array of tones from this bass. The three band eq is really nice, I don't care as much for the mid eq, I find it a bit harsh, so I roll it off most of the time and use my amp to at mids. I can also get a pretty good Motown tone by soloing the neck pick-up and using a foam mute.
I play in a rock cover band, this bass has been great a getting the modern rock tones i need.

That sounds great. Did you put any compression on that, or is it naturally so punchy?

No GCs in SoCal have any Ibanez BTB 5 strings in-store. Ack. I tried the Sam Ash in Canoga Park and they said they normally stock the BTB 575 but that they had just sold it recently and it wasn't back in yet.

The Sherman Oaks GC showed a Schecter Stiletto in stock but it wasn't on the floor, meaning it was sitting in a box in the warehouse. Nothing to try on floor = no sales, guys. I say this in the nicest way possible since I used to work at that location.
