5-string basses with tight, clear sounding B strings

Then a used Cirrus should be near the top of your list.

So should a Lakland 55-02, even thought I don't like the sound. I have a 55-01, and love it. Since you didn't, the 55-02 may be just what the doctor ordered.

Others to consider are used Yamaha TRB, used Pedulla Raptures, and new, the MTD Kingston or Heir.

All of these are under $1000, although you have to be patient to get a Rapture or 55-02 for this price.

A 55-01/02 would definitely be at or near the top (IMO) of the list at that price range. I haven't been able to try a Cirrus, but from all that I've heard I'd be willing to gamble on that as well.

I'm surprised to see suggestions for an SR505... the few that I've picked up in the past had B strings that seemed quite floppy. Possibly a bad setup in those cases, who knows.
