So right now I'm supposed to be getting a deal with a friend for a 5 string bass for 80 bucks (ibanez). i tried it out, i like the string spacing, i like the fact i can actually reach my hand around it, but i want to extend my range HIGHER, not lower. are there any places i can find five string sets with high C strings, or do you all suggest that I buy six string sets and just throw away the low B?

And you'll also be wasting money that way since the low B is the most expensive string. Buy individual strings in bulk from an online string retailer and put together your own custom sets.
yeah, what a waste of money when you could do as Thunder Pulse says and get your own completely custom set made from seperates, that has all the options you could ever want!

custom set is more expensive than regular 6 string set sorry
Don't forget if you get this bass setup as a 5-string with a Low B, you will need to replace the nut as well if you switch to a high C 5. Shouldnt cost you more than $50 to get a new nut cut and installed.
I thought about that, since just about every metal band i listen to tunes all around D, C, B, and A, but at the same time I'm not doing it so I can join up with a band and keep up with whatever range requirement of me needed.
I'm doing it because I intend to write songs independently of a guitar's support, and my ear just isn't anchored towards the low notes that I can't hear so much definition in.
You might screw up tensions and such and really ruin the bass if you don't get a professional's advice. Then again, I may not know anything.
How about a 4-string set and then get the C single, no strings wasted that way. I tune my 6-string E-F usually, and would get a 4-string set and get the C and F separately as single strings.
i may, but then again it's an 80 buck bass lol. on the other hand, I've just been considering going to just strings when i finally break the set that's already on there and get two sets of e-c packs and b-g packs each....i've always kinda had the idea of sticking somewhere between c and d in my tuning, as far as lows.....B isn't something i can hear in my head well....sounds like a too hollow note. i'm not gonna force anything on the bass....if it feels too tight i'll work with what i got so it works out, and just write whatever in a different tuning
Sometimes. If you go with a heavy four string set like 55-115's and add the hi C you wont. If playing heavies doesn't bother you. If you like lighter strings then you may need a new nut.
