Retired from the Coast Guard in 2007, worked in the Defense industry as an exec and consultant, no work since 2010.
All three kids went in (2 Navy, 1 Army) and wife was Navy. Oldest daughter out now and having tough time, so her (my granddaughter) 2 1/2yo is living with us. Wife says "Chip, why don't you just REALLY retire, I've been home last 24 years raising kids, why don't you be a stay at home "Poppa" and also take up learning Bass, you've wanted to do that for a long time. I'll go back to work."
Doing just that! Really enjoying my granddaughter also, she's a spitfire with a sweet disposition. She'll also learn to bow hunt etc with me, country girls gotta survive nowadays since most guys cant even find the safety of a bb-gun
She's a little girl who needs her Poppa. She reenergized my will to live since I was so depressed after 3 years of unemployment and all lip service from 'jobs for vets' peeps. There's just nothing out there, and with my retirement, I'll be dammed if I'll compete with 20-somethings for min wage jobs.
So now got a left handed bass and looking for an amp (just have a 10 watt someone gave me). Why bass? I found I was always humming the bass lines when playing drums.
So question, do y'all know any other fellows who started playing at 50? I've played Sax and Drums, so music isn't foreign. Goal is to learn enough to start gigging with others fast as I can.
Any advice, and I guess some encouragement.

try mixing country with Jimi Hendrix. Like the band 'Homemade Jam's stuff; when they start out country, then someone throws a switch and your in Blues/rock/speed metal land. Like a 3 Phase 240 switch. Then "land" with a Miles Davis trumpet solo. - also all the Buckhead crowd; Ga Satellites, Black Crowes, Drivin n Cryin.
