54 Precision Attic Find

Great thread Tim! Simply fascinating! I have to admire your dedication to this project being a lefty and all. I’m a lefty too and idk if I could do it. Great work on getting the old girl sorted out.

That would be something to figure out. When were the earliest lefty Fender basses? I’d start at ‘66 iirc but that’s just from what I’ve seen. I’m no vintage expert.

While I'm waiting for this lacquer to cure, I think I'll move over to the amplifier section and show the resurrection/restoration of an Acoustic 370 with 2 bottoms..
Gonna have to check that out. Seems to be a lot of Acoustic love as of late.
I used 0000 grade steel wool and naptha. It took off all the black and oxidized finish without hurting the good lacquer. The naptha cuts the grease without hurting the finish.
Do you know if that will work for cleaning an unfinished Musicman neck that’s pretty dirty? Also, as I have it on hand can I use lighter fluid instead of naphtha? Are they the same?

How's it going? Sorry, I don't check this page very often... Yes, naphtha and lighter fluid are basically the same. I posted many of my Acoustic projects under the amp pages...
Yea, its tough being a lefty! I have a 68 lefty, I'm not sure how early they might have been making them. The one on the far right is a genuine 68 Precision that I have owned since about 1972..it has been through he** and high water..original neck got broke..replaced with an Allparts righty. I refinished it as well.

Nice looking group shot Tom.

Thanks for the info re lighter fluid/naphtha. Just curious about one thing. I have read about folks using lefty necks on righty Fender type basses because they think there is a difference to how the now-longer E string behaves. What’s your take on this?
