so I'm looking at a markbass standard 106hf cab, and it's 6 ohms so I was wondering how much output it will give my amp. it's an ampeg svt-III running 275w at 8 ohms and 450w at 4 ohms. so how much at 6 ohms? and will it give me more power than my current 4x10 + 1x15 setup?
6 ohm cabs scare me. They're not easily adaptable to a modular system. If I wanted 6 speakers, I'd use a 4-10" and a 2-10" both at 8 ohms instead of a 6-10" at 6 ohms. Your power at 6 ohms would be roughly 365w or something like that. And no, it wouldn't be more power than running two 8 ohm cabs. That gives you 4 ohms and you can use the full 450w. I love the Markbass cabs I've heard but the 6 ohm cabs kind of freak me out.
Split the difference. 275+450/2=362.5. Close enough. Irrelevent. Output is determined by the sensitivity, frequency response and displacement limits of the speakers, not power. In any event, with six tens versus four tens and one fifteen the difference would probably be insignificant.
Just knowing they exist has made me reinforce my tin foil hat and surround myself with 2-ohm capable amplifiers.
what if the amp has an impedance output switch, do I set it at 4 or 8 ohm if I wanted to hook up a 6 ohm cab?
