6 string flatwound strings?

As I understand it, Carvin's bass strings (minus the LaBella tapes) are wound by GHS.

But, yeah, unless you're ordering a few sets, the price savings does not offset the shipping costs.

That does not mean they are Precision Flats though. I don't doubt for a second that GHS makes them, but they are made to Carvin's spec.

Bass Strings Online has the real deal Precision Flats for the same price as Carvin strings and charges less for shipping. So, you can get the real thing for cheaper!

I play 35.5" scale New York Bass Works 6-strings.

I do NOT believe the Carvins are the same flats as GHS Precision Flatwounds. The Carvin flats with all due respect were the WORST I have ever used.

The GHS OTOH have a nice thick thump to them though I have never used Pyramid so I can't compare there. Check youtube for GHS flats demos.

The other incredible flats are Thomastik Jazz Flats but maybe not for you as they are less about thump and more about full and present midrange that cuts through a mix.

my $.03141...

Carvin's flats are made by GHS and are indeed the same as Precision Flats. I know this because I've compared them side by side. Windings are the same. Sound and feel are the same.

But if they're as bad as you claim, none of this really matters as you're probably not using them anyway. ;)

Just wanted to set the record straight.

I was just trying to make you get post #13 for contradicting me. It worked! Ha.

But seriously, you got me thinking. I did try the Carvins a decade ago on a Carvin fretless 6 with only a piezo bridge so it's not really a fair test so re the Carvin/GHS flats listen to people who have recently tried them.

I can contribute this. I have been using TIs for a few years now:

They are all about prominent yet organic mids so while they are mid-pronounced, they are still smooth and natural. In a mix, they are right there - supporting with a voice - not mud.

Also, the TI Jazz Flat low B is the best B of any style of string I have heard; rich, focused, punchy and articulate. This is all based on a 35.5" scale NYBW Concert 6-string fretless.

Hope this helps.
