6-String Set D’Addario EXL165-6 – Quality Issues

To my surprise and disappointment I’ve discovered that 6th and 5th string from some of these bass string sets, the 6th string more often than the 5th one, produce a tin barrel sound – I call it also a pseudoflanger effect. It happens when you strike an open string, the sound is normal when you press the string down to any fret. So the sound on the 1st fret and on the open string differs too much – the open string gives very unpleasant overtones. One of the sets was especially messy – the 5th and the 6th string from it produced tin barrel / pseudoflanger effect on all frets!

Some sets are good, some are “tin-barreled”. Currently I use 5 strings from a new set and 6th string from an older one.

I always check the authenticity codes – all sets seem to be authentic. And I buy strings from trusted retailers. Outer and inner sleeves are always sealed.

My bass is totally all right – it’s Yamaha TRB 1006J BL. My bass combo is fine too – it’s Warwick BC 40.

My friend, who is an engineer, suggests that the winding of these “tin-barreling” strings is not tight enough.

I filed a complaint at D’Addario website.

I started playing 6-string bass quite recently (in October 2018), but I’ve played 4-string bass for eons now. I’ve always used D’Addario EXL160 string set and I’ve never experienced any problems with it. The problems emerged when I began to deal with D’Addario EXL165-6.

Welcome to TB @DeathAngel,

The problem that you are having could be caused by twisted strings. If you aren't familiar in how to deal with a twisted string, you need to do some reading on the "twisted string" discussions. Just do a search on the topic. There have been quite a lot of discussions on the "twisted string" topic and how to deal with it here on TB for many years.
