'62 RI Jazz: To Stack or Not To Stack

I've noticed more of the '62RI's have the standard vol-vol-tone set up than the stack vol/tone pots. Which is correct? I'm about to redo my '62RI Jazz (ordered the pups today :D) and I want to get it right.

Is it just cheaper for Fender Japan to just do the standard vvt set up?

I'm pretty sure they are supposed to have the vol/tone, vol/tone setup. I think a lot of them you are seeing are either mislabelled (I've seen a couple in the classifieds that were really Classic 60's and not 62 RI's) or are MIJ 62 RI's which I believe do not have the stacked vol/tone pots.

fwiw, my U.S. 62 RI does have the stacked vol/tone pots.

Thanks to all that have posted so far. So either way, it would be period correct, cool. I guess I'm in the stacked knob camp then :)

Is there a FYI or something somewhere that has all this fun Fender history that I can read? A book maybe?

Slightly off topic, I just finished rewiring my Harris P with a Fralin pickup and '57 vintage specs :D Look for that thread in the pickup forum soon.

They picked '62 as the re issue year so they could use either fingerboard style as well. The change from slab to veneer (curved) board was somtime during '62 making either version period appropriate. Some of the RI don't have string mutes either, which you would expect to see on a genuine 1962 J bass.

HUH?

This is what you would expect to see under the "ash tray" on an all original '62 J bass. This type of mute was discontinued sometime in '63. Today it's common to see the mounting holes, as the mutes themselves are long since removed and lost. I don't think many, if any of the RI's have them.

They come in the case, but the holes are not predrilled in the bass.
