79 Stingray

Hello all. My bandleader has a 79 Stingray that’s apparently been sitting in his basement for quite some time. I believe it belongs to his brother-in-law. The neck is severely warped, almost curled up right at the first and second fret. I’ve never seen anything like it. It’s a one piece maple neck w the skunk strip. I’m sure the truss rod is broken as well with the amount of upward curl that this neck has. It has heavy gauge flats on it that I’m sure was the cause of some of its demise.

So my question is what is it worth? I’m a player not a collector and have no interest or intention in resale. My only interest is in the body as I would buy a Status neck for it if he agrees to sell it. What would a fair price be for this bass?

It doesn't sound like a good "player bass." Even in the condition it's in, it's worth as much as a used late model EB Stingray, which would be a much better player bass.

In my opinion, it’s not worth all that much. I personally might offer $5-600 for the loaded body and hardware. Then put a Status neck on it and you have a cutlass!
But in the end, if he wants more than that, I’d allow it to be someone else’s project (problem)

Thanks for the input. I was thinking right around 450 - 500 would be fair and about 500 as my high point. I just wanted to get some feedback on it. As is I’d be looking at 500.00 max for the body and hardware, about 400.00 for the neck (500 for jazz bass nut width) plus paying my luthier to install it puts it about 1000-1100 out of pocket assuming the electronics are working correctly. Anything above that I’d might as well buy a used 2018 Stingray special. Lighter bodies and hardware new pickup design, 18v, roasted maple neck w ebony board, sparkle color. Hard to go wrong w that.
