I was looking at LDS and their custom cab page, So I shot them an email inquiring abour a 4x8 and 1x12 fullstack, I want a smaller setup then what I was going to get, and this seems to fit the bill.

My question is, how DO 8'' speakers sound? can they handle a low B and have any bass response, or are they all trebly and bright?

Depends on the speaker and cab design. SWR Henry the 8x8 is a very cool cab for 5-string. Phil Jones Bass uses 5" speakers and handles the low B very well, also.

Smaller speakers have a faster response. This has to do with the damping factor of the amp, also. Small speakers don't necessarily mean that they sound brighter, but they do sound tighter. You can tune a cab to make the speakers sound just about any which way.

8" speakers can give up low end like anybodies business.
They can't just do it real loud unless you have a bunch of them.

LDS built a 2x8 that was reviewed in BP that got rave reviews.

No they don't sound bright and trebly at all (unless you want them to!)

I'm in the process of saving up money to switch over to 8's.

I played through an SWR Henry 8x8 and a few other cabs with lesser amounts of 8's and I truely fell in love with the response and low end clarity.

So, I'm either getting a Henry 8x8 or having LDS build me an 8x8 or two.

I can't wait.

I play 4-string upright and 4- and 5-string electric basses through an EA VL208 and have been extremely satisfied with the sound.

IMO/IME, it's not just the size and number of drivers that matter; design parameters and execution all effect the sound quality.

All good design flows from the confluence of goals and constraints; before you buy, make sure your performance goals, and the constraints you're willing to accept, are consistent with those of the designer/maker.

I'll second the VL-208 ... literally, used with an electric bass it works well.

I also have the SWR Henry the 8x8 and it rocks the super tight and deep bass response is no exaggeration but as mentioned what is addictive is the speed and detail.

:smug: ... I never really heard what the Dark Star pickups could do until I used the VL-208s
