this is an original from the Newburgh factory that i bought in 1990 at Rainbow Music in Poughkeepsie, NY.
the best thing about this amazing sounding/playing instrument is the "one-off" tone circuit that Ned Steinberger built.
i was in a recording session when the engineer informed me of a line noise emanating from a poor ground. i contacted Ned and we sat down and discussed my personal tone goals. me, being a touring reggae bassist, was very enthusiastic about having an extra bit of "hump" in the sub-bass region, but also not at the expense of a "shiny" top end. as i spoke Ned took notes and asked me to give him a week. i'm not sure exactly what the "Q" and the "slope" might be, but this thing has a monstrous sound!
the tone control is a simple Treble Boost (clockwise), Bass Boost (ccw), and everything in between!
PROS:
piano-like tones
frets are excellent for age
flawless performance
compact for travel
outrageous clarity and punch
weights 8.5lbs
CONS:
a few slight battle scars (barely visible)
worn pup covers (highly visible)
currently strung BEAD (comes with extra RotoSound sets)
the replacement volume pot is hair-triggered (not much tension on the throw)
i am including four extra NOS Roto string sets, two used BEAD sets, some leftover guts from Ed Roman's store, Allen keys, and an extra gig bag (Synapse)
was $2700.00
now $2350.00 plus $75 shipped & insured
