9 hole precision pickguards????

I have a used precision body on the way that I bought from a member. There is no pickguard but it is drilled for 9 holes. I also found a precision pickguard on the bay with 9 holes so I ordered it. I have seen 13 hole on the standard precision and 14 on the squire.

Does anybody know the history of a precision body with 9 hole pickguard?

I just got the body about an hour ago and did count 9 holes. Here is the pickguard that I ordered and the hole in the guard in the pic visually seem to match the body. Also my P neck fit right in.

I have a '93 Jazz which has a 9-hole pickguard. According to Fender, this was made starting in '89 and discontinued in '94. According to what I read, the Jazzes for several years after were not as good in quality.

Fender says they have no replacement parts, and I have searched every aftermarket source in the universe (or it seems like it). My final answer was to buy a slab of pickguard material to make my own custom pickguards from.

Perhaps there was a similar history with your Precision. I can send you a copy of the info they sent me on the Jazz if you like. Do you know what year your P is?

I just bought the body from a talkbass member and he does not have any info on it. I bought the pickguard on the bay and waiting for it. The ad for the pickguard did not state which pbass model it was for but just that it is nine holes.

A lot of cheaper import basses use the 9 hole layout for Precisions. SX, Squier, and the like. They're tough to find replacement PG's for :hmm:

But if you could find one that fit you can trace it and have Jeannie's or Terrapin make you one from the trace or the original.

What I would do:

You have the truss rod access similar to Fender, fill the pickguard holes that don't match Fender layout, route the control cavity larger to accept CTS pots, route for jazz bridge pickup and you'll have yourself a nice PJ . . . also make sure the neck pocket is matched for a Fender-style neck. Then you can pick your guards from almost anywhere.

I believe that the pickguard holes match the 57-59 reissue. I have a 9 hole reissue pickguard on the way and will know for sure next week. Also my pbass neck fits in the pocket. Ordered a Bayou cables harness for it and still undecided on the pickups. Dimarzio P's or Nordstrand NP4.

Even if the last post of this thread is already 13 years old, I'm quite curious about your 9 hole pickguard you found on the bay. Did it match your bass?
As I recently found a "precision" body with 9 holes for the pickguard and a slightly different positioning for the pickups cavity, I was wandering...
