9v Dying Quick in Tobias Bass? Please help!

Waddup y'all, I recently picked up a used Tobias Toby Pro 5 String this last month and overall it hasn't given any problems other than my batteries. After about a week or two, my battery (specifically your commercial stock Duracell 9v) seemingly gives out completely and quits emitting signal from my bass. Should I be looking for different battery brand, rechargeable batteries, etc. or is this something I should consider taking to a guitar repair shop?

If it helps, I'm running the bass through my Orange Crush 50BXT running at 120v, which then goes through my Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 and into my MacBook.

How many batteries have you been through, and are you sure they were fresh and in good shape?

Do you own a multimeter? Can you check the wiring on the jack?

Active basses typically use a stereo jack as a "disconnect" to turn the battery off when the bass is not in use. A stereo jack has a separate connection for the ring and sleeve, but a mono cable (as you'd normally use for a bass) just has a really long sleeve instead of a separate sleeve and ring. Your jack should be wired with the ground for the preamp and other electronics connected to the sleeve terminal, and the black wire from the battery connected to the ring terminal. Thus, when the cable is not in the jack, the connection is broken, and the battery is disconnected (and doesn't drain). But when you insert a cable, the sleeve on the cable connects the sleeve and ring terminals, which grounds the battery, and the electronics receive power.

Problems like you're describing are often caused by an issue at the jack. Sometimes the terminals will be bent or the jack will be poorly aligned, and there will be a short. For instance, if the cavity is shielded, and the ring terminal (where the black wire from the battery is soldered) is touching the shielding, that will basically bypass the switching action and leave the battery connected 100% of the time. Other times, an ignorant prior owner may replace the stereo jack with a mono jack and not realize that they're defeating the switching action. Or some other problem will leave the battery connected 24/7.

So, pop the cover off and have a look at the jack as a starting point. Show us some photos if you're confused.

I opened up the back and took a look at it. As I’m new to both the world of active basses and bass hardware in general, I didn’t want to poke around too much so I just took some pictures to give y’all a feel of what’s goin on in there.

From what I gathered from the reply, if I were to test the connection, I would use the multimeter to check the wires connecting the jack, correct? That way I’d be able to tell if the circuit is closed even when unplugged. If it’s something different pleeease correct me lol. I won’t be poking around until I know exactly what I’m doing.

Basically, yes. Here's what I would do. Take the battery out. Put your multimeter in DC resistance, or continuity testing mode if it has it. Connect one probe to the negative terminal on the battery clip (the actual little snap that goes over the negative terminal on the battery). Make sure that probe is not touching anything else or shorting against anything. Then, touch the second probe to a few known-good ground points inside the control cavity - such as those big ugly solder blobs on the backs of those pots (where ground wires are attached). If it shows continuity, then you have a problem, likely at or inside the jack.

At that point, you have to kind of just poke around the jack, see if any wires are shorted or connected wrong, see if anything is touching the shielding, and so on. The black wire from the battery clip should run straight to one of the terminals on the jack - if it doesn't, follow where it goes and let us know.

Or, worst case, just replace the jack, and make sure you do a clean job of installing it.
