OK, there are luthiers' outfits that sell bass guitar knob pullers for up to $80. ~But I know where you can get a good tool for this for $9.99... It's lower jaws slide right under knobs, and with just a slight squeeze and a little pulling the knob slides right up, undamaged!

So here's a photo of mine... I added some padding to the jaws (although it's probably not really necessary) by sticking on some small pieces cut from the soft sides of self-stick Velcro, and voila: ~a $9.99 bass control knob puller!
