My apologies if this is in the wrong forum.

Has there ever been a bass with movable pickups?

Imagine a bass with pickups that could be located anywhere between the neck and bridge. I think that a bass like this would have infinite tonal possibilities.

Anyone ever seen or hear of anything like this?

  2. I vaguely remember seeing something like that when I first started playing. No idea who made it though. Time to call upon Google.

Gibson made some with sliding pickups, though I forget the model name.

If I'm not mistaken, one of the Ovation basses had a movable pickup.
On the other hand, Ampeg made a bass with removable pickups

I do beleive that the Gibson Riper had one. It moved just a couple of inches either way in the middle of the body. Also, I do beleive that Spalt Basses are made to have a moving neck pickup.

That is sort of what I had in mind, but I hate the way that Rail looks, and the Turner pickup just rotates.

I'd like to combine the Rail's range of pickup motion with the body and style of a jazz bass. And, do it with two pickups.

That's what I was thinking as I was reading down the page. Played one, nice, a little heavy, but nice.

The Ovations just look this they're movable due to the elaborate "rail" system on them but they are fixed.

    Alembic #1 had a rail/moveable pickup design.
Jack Casady has said it's intention was for him to experiment; IOW not meant to be a design feature, if I understood him correctly.

I remember the old Gibson Grabbers had a moveable pickup; Gene Simmons played one for a while...
