A day to create something. An indie thread.

Since I can only find one old thread on this topic here, where the term is being debated (please, no more of that!), this musical area, which of course isn't a single style, deserves more attention. I first encountered the term when I was 13 or 14, and what I associate with it has captivated me ever since. I'm referring to styles like classic indie pop (or C86/twee pop) of the 80s and early 90s. But dream pop, shoegaze, noise pop, post-punk, Britpop and Madchester also fall into this category. I'm referring, of course, to the musical aspect. Everything else is certainly open for discussion.

I'd like to start with two songs from one of my favorite bands, the Pale Saints. Are there any other old indie kids present?

I wasn’t a kid then, but it’s what made the 80’s far more tolerable for me than the 70’s. Beforehand, coming out of the punk/new wave/power pop/postpunk era, after immersing myself in synthpop, I also got onboard with bands like the Only Ones, Echo, the Furs and so on, plus the trickle down from Joy Division and Bauhaus(honestly wasn’t that impressed with U2, but I went to see them on their first US tour anyway, they were fresh). Then I heard the Cocteau Twins, mind blown(being a Kate fan, it was not a large leap). DCD and the entire 4AD thing was impressive, but the first This Mortal Coil album was in its own world. Gorgeous sounds, glorious melancholy.

So yeah, all the stuff you mentioned I certainly took in. Then I also came across Australian band The Church, and they checked all the boxes for me. After moving west, and after a string of coincidences, I got to know them personally. I met my wife indirectly through them. Had worked in a succession of record wholesale/retail, so I got to hear all sorts of things, and see many of these bands. Always up for jangle and chime, and whatever the hell Kevin Shields was doing.

That sounds like an interesting trip. Yes, the Cocteau Twins are brilliant, and I'm of course familiar with The Church. Kevin Shields is a hidden genius. Aside from their classic album, I particularly like My Bloody Valentine's early work.

There’s this old video of them on an early thrashy gig where Lush’s Miki Berenyi is seen in the audience…taking notes perhaps?

They really are. Seen them/him plenty of times over the years but hadn't seen them for quite a while till last June. They played Bizarro. So good. Still rocked.
They're playing Seamonsters this tour. My fav. Cheers!

My contribution for the day.

I've seen them countless times and still go to every concert in my city. The Television Personalities are legendary, of course, and fit in perfectly.
