A Funny Story About A Bass

Now that you took back the Ibanez, you have $1k to spend on something else. What are you going to get?

First off i'm going to return my ODB-3, and probably nab a SansAmp VT Bass. Then i'll pick up a TU-88 tuner, and as for after that it all depends.

I'll definitely be picking up some new pedals, and possibly install EMG's in my J-Bass.

As for the pedals, probably a flanger/phaser, an envelope filter, a fuzz pedal of some sort and perhaps a CreamPie.

Well, I don't share your feelings! And no I don't understand! Love a bass just because I started with it? Feh. You should see the crap I started with! Join the Fender admiration society? Feh. I've got a MIM Fender Deluxe and it'd be the first thing I'd sell if I had to get rid of something! I got it for "old school" and it does that job quite nicely. But by personal preference I pick my SX over the Fender unless I really need to "show class" with tobacco sunburst, tort guard and Fender on headstock.

And the thing I REALLY don't understand is someone who can't appreciate the modern sound of Ibanez. Dude! They are the Standard for "modern" bass sounds the way Fender is the standard for "old school". OK, I don't own one, but if I were into the kind of music that needed one, I'd get one in a second rather than trying to cram some out of date Fender tone into music where it doesn't fit.

My story is that I own a nice stable of boutique basses where each one does it's thing like a miracle! Dream on kid! But one day I'm bopping into the local music store and the owner yells across the store to me; "Hey! You just GOTTA hear this bass!" It was a used Modulus TBX and indeed I DID need to hear it. I walked out of the store with it and it's been my main axe ever since. It has tone to die for, B string to die for, graphite neck never needs adjusting no matter how bad the weather and cuts the mix like a knife through hot butter...something my Fender is NEVER gonna do. You should ever be so lucky, kid.

So, do I play it for everything no matter what like Fender-lovers do? No. I use it where it fits. Did I sell all my other basses because I was in love? Do I look that dumb? Each of my basses was bought because it provided me with something special. Will I suddenly not need that because I bought something new? Hardly. I play the bass that fits the music. When it's the Fender I play it. Otherwise, I don't.

It's stories like the one in this thread that make me wonder just what is wrong inside the heads of some bass players. Does Fender sprinkle addictive substances or love potion inside their basses that makes normal bass players loose their common sense once they hold one? Inquiring minds want to know.

Is there something wrong with playing Fenders? I prefer Fenders over any other bass I've ever played. The thing is, I had the thought in my mind that the Ibanez would have been bounds and leaps better than my Fender, when in reality I prefer the sound, look and feel of my Fender over the Ibanez I purchased. The Fender could have been my third bass and it wouldn't have made a difference.

The point of the story is that I didn't realize how good I had it with my fender until the thought of not playing it anymore (or as much) was introduced.

I know how it feels. I've wanted and bought some expensive basses. Bought a warwick because I thought I liked it. Some months later turns out that I didn't like it at all, especially in the mix.

Now I'm going through somewhat reverse situation. I think I kinda like an ibanez (sr 6 string, is it 506, I have no idea..) But the idea of paying for a bass that says ibanez on the headstock just seems so wrong and I'm worrying I end up not liking it, just like the previous ibanez 6 I had. This one is way better though..

And which bass of mine gets most play time at the moment. Well, it's squier.

BassFace1,

Love the story!

I miss my first Bass although my Hagstrom Coronodo IV was stolen. I loved my MIM 1992 Fender P Bass but sold it. I have an Ibanez EDB 600 that some hate, I love it! I have a Douglass WEBNA 5 string and an SX Ursa PJ Bass. Some on here hate the new SX Ursa because SX was forced to change the headstock--I love mine. It is all about your preference! We should not be so uptight about a Bass Player's preference! If we all thought and played the same, there would be some real dull music out there! I was a great story to share and BassFace1, thanks for sharing!!! Others, it is just not that serious to get bent out of shape! I love that SX Ursa over some of the Fenders I have recently played Others think that the Squiers are better--It is your ear, your money, your choice!

You say it like it's a bad thing.

There should be no rules when it comes to music. It's what you feel, and you shouldn't have to play a certain bass or play a certain way to appease peoples critical thinking.

Good for you.

Oh, that didn't come out right then. It's far from being bad. I love showing up with a squier instead of a big name instrument. Just like it would be cooler to beat a ferrari on a ford. And that doesn't mean I think ford is bad.

I'm thinking about bringing back my MIM Jazz for appraisal, and then using the money along with my left over christmas money to buy a highway one american Fender.

I noticed the highway one americans are cheaper than the non highway one americans. Any reason?
