A good sustaining 5-string slap bass for under a $1000.

I've been playing with flats but I have a chance to join a different style of band that needs the sustain and slap sound. I could use the help on this. Thanxs

A few years back, I bought a Spector Legend 5 for ~$600, put in real EMG 40TW's for ~$175, sold the old preamp and p/u's for ~$125 and bought a hardshell case for $100. The net result was a great instrument that sounds really good for $700. You need to play anything you buy first (especially for slap) to see if you like the string spacing.

Used Fender MIA Deluxe Jazz 5er.... Lakland 55-02.... Stingray 5.....

All of the above are great sounding slap basses (with roundwounds of course) and are all approx $1000 used.

Consider a used USA Peavey Cirrus 5. As soon as I heard this clip I knew I was going to get a Cirrus:



You can't go wrong with a Ray 35 either if you like the Music Man Stingray.

The Cirrus basses just have such a boutique tone and feel to them, but they are available at super-low prices if you shop used. No other bass under $1000 comes close, and very few basses under $2000 come close IME/IMO. They are not my ultimate bass, but they are seriously great instruments with top-notch electronics that produce a wide range of very good tones.

^ I agree with you. The Cirrus has such a Ken Smith-like tone to it! (And that song/bass line is so groovy)

I'd recommend a Lakland 55-01 or 55-02 based on my experience.
They've got the wider string spacing, flatter neck, flatter radius-ed fingerboard, and have the whole ash/maple/maple thing going on.

What kind of sound do you want? Marcus Miller? Louis Johnson? Something else?

Used MM Stingray 5 or Bongo 5. Used G&L L2500.

I'm not a fan of P or J basses for slap, the pickguard gets in my way.
Just try out what you like, and my suggestion would be to go active.

A 5 string neck-thru Carvin Bunny Brunel will run just over $1000 new. 19mm spacing and asymetrical neck are to die for.
