a Jazz question

Hello For the most part I like the body style of the fender jazz bass. The one thing I don't like is that they always seem to me that the strings are a little too close to the body. Don't know if they are actually closer than average or it just seems that way. Does anyone else agree? did you get use to it? I've never tried one without a pickguard, and I wonder if that would make a difference? And most importantly - do any of the manufacturers of quality jazz style basses feature strings that are not so close to the body?
