A little help choosing

I am looking at a good distortion pedal for my bass I already have a boss odb-3 and i am not really happy with the sound. A long time ago i had a pro co rat pedal. But now everybody says the newer ones are junk. I have read that a lot of bass players use a big muff.. But they make a bass version and a guitar version. so now i am a little confused and i dont want to spend a lot of money heck i just bought the boss and i am not really happy with it.. Any help would be very much helpful... I guess my question is what do yall use and why... I know a lot of bassest dont use distortion but i do a little metallica and i am trying to get close to the cliff burton sound without spending a fortune.. thanks Roy

Umm, I really don't mean to sound harsh by saying this, but if you notice the search function at the top, and just search 'Distortion', you will get thousands of posts all asking the same thing

a tech 21 xxl bass edition distortion pedal would be right up your alley. this pedal can give you a pretty heavy sound. a low gain setting on that pedal can easily nail that cliff burton sound from the ride the lightening album.

Cliff Burton used a Muff and a Tube Screamer on different songs. They were both guitar pedals; the bass versions didn't exist when he was alive. Neither is overly expensive new (especially if you use the Talkbass discount at The Perfect Bass - Bass Guitars, Amps, Gear!) and they often come up in our "effects for sale" section here, so you should be able to find a good deal without much trouble.

i just got a bass big muff today and had a little jam with it. so far im loving it.. prefer it to the odb-3 straight away

There are sooooooo many distortion pedals out there. If you buy used from Talkbass, you can try one and probably get most of your money back out if you don't like it.

Definitely worth checking into an Iron Ether Oxide. It's not overly expensive, hand made, and is as versatile and awesome sounding as it gets. I've had mine for almost a month, and after 10 shows and 3 rehearsals a week, it still amazes me how well it works in the mix and plays with my other pedals. Built by a TB member who knows how to treat his customers.

sansamp bddi- i use this for minor warmth, and more or less like a pre amp.

catalinbread teaser stallion- i love it for crunchy, evil bass (liked it so much i have two).

polish love- not a fan; bad impulse buy.

you mention fuzz too, so heres that:

boss fz-2- i like it with the bddi. i use it on a pretty aggressive sound.

malekko assmaster- kinda big, but it sounds great. i will never get rid of it.

iron ether oxide- can cop the assmaster sound, and so much more, all in a tiny package. i highly recommend this one if you dont have a fuzz. get it with all the jacks on the top.

chunk os fuzz- eh... not a huge fan of the chunk fuzz sounds alone... the rest is good though.

zvex machine- technically not a fuzz nor od, but it does nasty well. its a one trick pony but i love the one trick it does. it does it well.

How do i know if it has the 308 chip? i was told the serial number 300000 and above is crap. But where is the serial number located. I have talked to a local guy and he has one but doesnt know were the serial number is located eather it does come with a box and he said the number on the box was two letters and 28 something i cant rember what the number is... is there any way to tell by looking?

apparently over 300,000 have complete garbage components and if its below that it still may not have the LM-308.

the serial # on mine is on a sticker right on the back of the rat.

just seach around, most times if someone is selling one they'll say whether it has the chip or not.
