I'm presently using a 2012 Fender Precision Select as my main bass while onstage. Unfortunately, I've noticed a problem that has made it less than enjoyable to use for more than 15 minutes at a time. Indeed, I find myself constantly cleaning the back of the neck between songs. In a nutshell, over time, the back of the neck seems to "collect" the sweat and grime developed while playing. Black "sludge" forms where my hand has been on the neck (yes, I sweat a lot in the stage-lights -- lol). But it even occurs when I'm practicing on it at home -- it just takes a little longer for the sludge to collect. It's become a problem in that, if I forget to clean the neck's back thoroughly between sets, it truly takes the enjoyment out of what I'm doing onstage.
I've got a number of basses, including two other Precisions and a Jazz, and I've never noticed this problem on any of them. I'm really hoping that someone out there in "Talk Bass land" has experienced this problem, can explain WHY it happens, and knows of a way to correct it without unduly affecting the integrity of the finish.
