A little more help

since im new to effects im eem to be only loking in the ranges of boss and ehx pedals mainly because all the people i know personally with effects have only those pedals....i would love for a lot of feedback on personal opinions on ANY type of pedal. thanks alot.... much feedback apprecciated

Well, since you're new I just want to mention the importance of searching. Here at TB, we're all about helping you help yourself. There's a search button to the right of your screen. It yields immediate results, and you can probably find almost everything you'd want to know.

For an extremely broad question like this, I would suggest looking through the "Post your pedalboard" threads, the huge sound sample thread, and the distortion and compressor megathreads. Feel free to poke around the recent stuff, too. We're always talking here. :D

Now I've given you a good place to start, I wish you good luck. May the GAS be with you. ;-D

There are absolutely no opinions on any pedal in this forum at all, I can assure you of that! :smug:

Other than my thousands of posts, a few of which have some useful information, I can add that Homebrew pedals are cheaper than they should be, BJF are worth the price of admission and have that secret X-Factor (see below), Fulltones sound good but are put together real sloppy, and Behringer sucks.

Patience, young grasshopper... spend some time reading up on effect types, and read any threads that spark your interest. Check out the threads mentioned by Spankypants, and any sound samples we've lovingly recorded over the years.

It really narrows down to getting experience first. When I first explored distortion, I didn't really know what I wanted - only that there were some artists out there with tones I really liked. Being an old-school Metallica fan, I checked out what Cliff Burton was using, and found my way into the various Big Muff pedals out there. That was an easy trek for me - I knew I wanted some crazy fuzz.

Overdrive was tricky... in fact, I ended up not getting a pedal for it, as I wasn't too satisfied with some of the ones I tried or read about here. I found an amp that gave me the thick gritty sound I was looking for instead!

Compression was another story... I didn't really want or need one until I tried out a few. Some squashed my sound and killed the low end; others smoothed out my dynamics and gave me some volume stability. Some are better than others for certain tasks, and not everyone likes the same compressor for their needs. Even though I'm satisfied with my current compressor pedal (an EBS Multicomp) for mild compression, I can't help but wonder what other compressors sound like. And believe me, I've been through a few (but not as many as Bongomania).

Sometimes, you know what sound you're looking for because ________ uses it in the song "________" on a riff or a fill or a solo. Other times, you don't know what you're looking for until you hear it or read about it or even try it out.

Step 1 - Browse through the "Pedalboard" threads (Parts I, II, and III).
Step B - When you see something interesting, do a search (on TB and on the web) and see what you can find out about it. Self-education is a powerful tool.
Step III - After you get through with all of that, start begging your parents for GAS money.

+3.... my PW tuner, Morley wah, and Boss flange!

+ the barrage of GAS that your milanta can't fix.

By the way, that's almost the SAME EXACT process I went through. I saw something cool that I liked in a thread/wanted to try something out and then I looked it up and went on evilbay. The parents hate me, they don't show it, but I know they hate me... :D
