A newbies choice.

Hello to everyone,
so... here's the deal.
I'm pretty new at this. I am playing the guitar but I recently decided to pick up the bass. A friend of mine gave me a spare bass to get started but some time in the very near future I will have to buy one for my own since I love it!!!
The problem is that I have to choose a bass guitar. I am between 2 choices. The first one is an Ibanez SR700 and the other one is a Fender Blacktop Jazz Bass.
The first one because of the very nice features everyone is talking about (including my friend that suggested it) and the slim guitar-like neck (I have tried an SR505 and it was very guitar-like) and the second one because it is so damn beautiful and that I am thinking that as a first bass I should get something more of "classic".
I play and record heavy music (from stoner to black metal) if that is of any importance, although in my alone time I like to play the blues a lot so I need something versatile.
Thank you in advance and sorry if my thought are sometimes a bit too irrational.
Please, I don't want this to become a Ibanez Vs Fender post, I just need a little help deciding.

At the time I run the bass through my pc with Guitar rig at home and any amp I can find at rehearsal studios, I know it's not optional, but the money is short and I can only afford to buy a new bass not an amp, if you read again my post you will find what music I like to play. The tone I am looking for is something of a heavy growl sound. As I said before I'm new at this. Just figuring it out step by step.

Both are excellent choices and will get the job done. I would probably buy the one that I could find used in the nicest condition. I am a little biased towards used instruments myself, in full and fair disclosure. I like the like new quality you can get at a much lower price. Then you can spend the rest of your budget (if you have one) on other stuff, like the above mentioned pedals.

PS - I should ask - have you heard/played them both?

Edit: Sorry, just noticed that you are not in the US. My points are based solely on my experience here. Not sure you can do the same thing there. Sorry about that!

I think in the next couple of days I will try the Fender since a shop near me has it. I have tried the cheaper Ibanez SR505 and I liked it (I just don't need a 5-string) and I am looking for a place here to find the SR700 for a trial too. I am against used gear too I like them new so I can give the the care I want!

If you're looking to play heavier stuff, definitely try out the Blacktop Jazz and see how it works for you. I will admit, I'm rather biased when it comes to the Blacktop, but it was it's sheer aggressive "ballsiness" that made me want to buy one. That thing is a beast!

But, don't take only my word…check out the Blacktop Club to get more first-hand accounts from a bunch of fellow TalkBass members.
