A preamp that will not destroy the mix

For me as a previous player who still have Mesa Boogie Guitar amps, the only satisfactory bass guitar grind is to use separate amps. Split one signal and even just a humble tube screamer into a tube guitar amp with the bass control cut to 0 - 2 and the tube guitar amp on the edge while the other split signal runs through a regular bass amp providing bass tone is the no compromise solution. Of course that is heavy and cumbersome. Try it sometime.

The wetter bass did a series shootout of the 48 drive pedals. The linked video is a summary, he re amps the same playing through them all. If you go to his channel and listen to the series you will get a really good idea of the character differences.

The jellyfish won for good reason. Several others on the list are excellent. But if you want a flexible drive with DI, the jad freer capo mentioned already is very hard to beat

you will likely be happy and still cheaper than buying several others that you end up not liking :-)

Hi,

I almost manage to grab JHS Punchline, but it is hard being in EU ;)

CAPO has a lot of waiting and I don't know if I will like the drive through AD200 amp.

Anybody has an opinion about Ampeg SGT-DI Preamp?

Yes, there is a difference in tone. I found the Grit circuit keeps the lows but removes some of the highs, which makes it harder to hear in a live mix, not as noticeable in the studio mix. The volume can be set to unity gain using the Grit Level control. I don't change settings during songs but will change settings to achieve certain tones for a particular song in the studio. For live performances I set the controls once and only tweak slightly if changing basses.

Right now I have Darkglass Vintage Deluxe V2 and clean section lets say it is ok, but when I am hit the drive button, the output level changes and bass slightly disappear from the mix. And overall the drive on this pedal is still, I don't know how to fraze it, to modern?

The goal is that I will be connected to Tube amp (Orange AD200), sometimes Orange Little Bass Thing, but also I want to have possibility to play without amp and cab, and still maintain acceptable sound. So my main focus is to have nice clean sound with little warm (so AD200 is doing this) but sometimes I need to add more drive in the middle of the song. I don't want to have distorted sound to much with lot of highs and midds. Just something that will enhance the sound with nice drive that will not take away the bass and headroom and will not destroy the bands mix during the live show.

Any recommendations? Go with preamp with drive, or separate preamp and separate drive?

Pretty doggone close except the MXR doesn't have a Compressor but does have a Gate. I need to read the manual to understand how that works. I really like the B-Factory but the D.I. is unusable due to the signal is loud and distorted so I have to use the line out.

If anyone is interested, I just ordered Olympic MkIIIS from Shift Line, along with Buzz V.2 Bass drive, also from Shift Lane. So I hope this will provide me the thing what I am looking for. Also i will add to my pedalboard Empress Bass Compressor and some effects (Chorus Bass Clone and Boss OC-3).

I need to be honest that Olympic MKIIIs is really a good preamp. It is so easy to set up really good sound, either on DI or Jack out. I will see how it will be live, but I am pretty relax about it ;) When I did record and compare Olympic with DG Vintage ultra V2 - it is like haven to hell. It also do good companion for Empress Compressor. I am still trying to get as much from Buzz V2, just to add a bit of OD to the overall sound only in particular places in song, but I think we will get there.

Still kinda looking with affection on JHS Punchline, as I think the drive section there can be my holy grail, but Olympic is a really fantastic peace off gear. When you adding this gain on 10 o clock, so just to push a little of this grid it is perfect :)
