Well, since the middle four strings are basically the four strings on a regular bass, what you're getting is extended range both lower and higher. So, there will be extra fingerings while doing scales and such, because you'll have so much more you can do in one position.
The main reason to go with a 6'er vs a 4 is that extended range.
Another strength of the 6 not to be ignored is the ability to play a greater range of notes in a single position. Lateral playing certainly has advantages!
