I know it's not a pedal and would prolly be considered more of a "preamp/DI", but the Broughton P15 is sweet. It gets tube-y and can get a little grindy and sounds sa-WEEEET doing it all. AND it has tone shaping capabilities.

Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Oh! And did anybody mention the VTDI or the VT Deluxe?




I've got to not look at these types of threads. GAS pains....:help:

Along those same lines, I've spent some good time now with my volt thrower and with certain settings this pedal has a great rich sounding subtle overdrive. Then obviously with others it goes into full on metal up your ass sound. So here is a recommendation from far left field. Dunwichamps Volt Thrower.
This thing drop kicked my Beta of the board today.

Don't say it. I passed on them when they were most recently available :)

I get it though. My Blower isn't too bad at low settings.

I love the newest version of the SFT for an overdriven amp sound. I like the original version too though it doesn't clean up as well.
The only issue I've found is that when it's before an engaged pedal the volume more than doubles. Turn the pedal that it's going into off and the signal drops.
I've tried this at 9 and 18 volt. With a Pedal Power 2 as well as separate wall warts and with numerous pedals including my FEA DE-CL.
Because of this, unfortunately, it rarely makes it into my line-up.
If I'm only using one pedal, this would be it. Very organic and complex subtle detail plus EQ.

I just picked up a Visual Sound "Open Road" for $50 (used) and I'm really impressed by it!

The Open Road is based on the Nobels ODR-1, but built a bit more reliable...

It's got some inherent thickness to it; it stacks nicely with my Barbershop to give a mid-gain option, but could also fulfill the low-gain side of things pretty well.

This is my 75 Jazz with brand new Rotos. Dunwich Volt Thrower and REDDI. The first is just the REDDI then every one after is with the Dunwich, starting as subtle as possible gradually adding some distortion. Then the last one is without the Dunwich but with my John K Mu-tron gain clone boost.

Like it. Don't think it's that far off of my Blower, so I don't feel like I missed much, though I wish I could own all the things :)

Meh. :)

Seriously though, despite how the solo'd clips sound, it's really about how it will sit with the band. More than once I've heard a bass track that sounded great in the mix, but solo'd sounded crappy. I'm not saying this is the case here, but I can see the Volt Thrower really shining live.

IMO the Agro definitely needs a revisit, I love mine. It's a different, but very useful flavour of OD.

Cool, I'll revisit.

UPDATE: Got a Fairfield Barbershop, used it as much as I could, returned it. Cool tonality, but never pure/flat enough. Wren & Cuff, Suppa Phat Phuk is great, I own that now. Bought an original, early BJFE BBOD, didn't love it...found mid response too pokey and the whole thing a little cloudy. However, also got the reissue by Bearfoot. Very surprised to say I like that more, so that's on tap from now on. It's not exactly what I need for this purpose, meaning super low-gain, but it's just a great all-around. Then, total surprise: TC Spark...love that one. Who knew? No accounting for taste. So for the super low gain stuff, I'm stoked on Wren & Cuff SPP, TC Spark, and my trusty old Xotic BB Preamp. Thanks all!

Hi JMJ; Have you tried a Cochrane Timmy? It is (imo) tonally transparent, touch-sensitive, and adds a really nice light overdrive. Not sure if that's exactly what you were looking for in this thread, though. Also -- I'm curious if you've ever tried the Idiotbox Blower Box. It's Rat-based, but sounds really cool and gnarly on low gain settings, and doesn't lose bass.
