I play bass for church and go into a sans amp into the mixer. I am being asked to play bass for the high school musical. I don't have a bass rig of my own, but I have a vox valtronix 100watt solid state with a 12 incher. My school has a hartke 500 watt head, but no cab. I could put the head into a p.a. box with a 15 and a horn, but I don't know how that would sound.

Can I use the vox for a rather low volume sound, or should I use the hartke head into a p.a. speaker?

Thanks for any recs; I am a bit of an equipment innoramus.

Might sound best to plug your sans amp into your PA rig.

Just don't plug a powered signal (speaker out) from that head into your Mic/line inputs of a PA

If the PA cab is already at school, I'd definitely try the Hartke into it. A lot depends on the cab's design, but you might like it a lot. (Use the Sans Amp for FOH sound, and the Hartke+PA cab for stage monitoring.)

Try both, go with the best one.

I would expect the sansamp + some power but not too much + PA speaker.....or Hartke amp + PA speaker...or some combination thereof...to be "the best" in terms of bass tone at some decent volume...but don't discount trying the Vox 12...at a lowish volume (no farting on low notes), focusing on a nice tone, then sticking a mic in front of it and sending that to the PA.


So...in summary....try it all and pick the "best one".**







** "best" in this case means best for the entire audience, working within the equipment as well as technical/personal limitations of the situation. That may or may not be what sounds/feels "best" to the one guy playing the bass, listening to the results from right next to whatever speaker is in use.

I used to play pit bands in school ( tho I didn't play bass at the time). I would guess that if you don't have an amp, you won't be able to hear yourself. Not sure about your space constraints, it was always tight for us where we performed. I bet your vox amp would do the trick.
