Indeed, emotions are complex. All I can tell you is, I see the song gets a very happy reaction every time it's played, and the Hawaiin version does have a nice country step to it.
Of course, folk and country of all cultures is where the acoustic dance roots go. The band I play with that specializes in this stuff never fails to get a dance floor full, even with some of the weird non-4/4 medieval stuff.
