acoustic bass guitar action

hello out there-- i recently had a very talented luthier make some amazing repairs/adjustments and do an overall set up on my acoustic bass guitar. the bass plays great. the action is about as low as you could ever want it. the A & D string buzz when played open. the E & G are fine. the luthier cut me a small strip of wood (ebony) and said to place it under the saddle the next time i change the strings--in order to slightly raise the action? does this make sense to anyone out there? if so, any particular way to do this? i am a skilled tradesman (experience working on guitars and basses) and my luthier thought enough of me to assume i could handle the modification. any suggestions before i attempt this? my grandpa taught me to ask before i do things for the first time. thanks dudes

I think that would make sense. Maybe cut some slits in the piece of ebony for the strings to run through so that it stays in place?

Pull out the saddle with pliers or whatever, make sure the veneer fits in the slot, depending on the length, place to the piece on center, replace the saddle and string er up, see if the buzzing persists, if it does, the frets need leveling, or the nut needs to be fixed/replaced. Good luck

That is generally how you set the action on acoustic guitars with fixed wood bridges. The saddle comes out and there are shims under it. Sometimes, you have to sand the bottom of the saddle to lower the action.
